This is an older thread by Mike that gave me inspiration for a new mission. He posted two very nice photos of Omega's first production automatic watch, housed in a stainless steel case Reference 2374 and powered by 30mm. 10 'bumper' movement, later called the Caliber 330 and the ancestor of all subsequent Omega semi-rotor automatics. This will cheer me up, because I really need a steel casing to wear without all the fuss and worry, but one that's also historically fun and not "just another sailor" (yes, I love them, but I already have two of them, and that's enough). The 2374 probably fits the bill, while we think it certainly has some interesting period design features.
So the search begins. The first problem is that most examples for sale have very poor dials, or have obviously been reground (as is often the case with these '40s and '50s Omegas). Finding a good original condition seems very difficult, especially since steel cased watches are rarely cared for as gold. Another problem is that when I did track down a half-assed example, the vendor offered crazy money. In Europe, they seem to be selling for quite a bit at prices over 1,000 GBP ($1,690 USD). It seemed silly when I could pick up a perfectly good looking '50s Steel Vein Seamaster half in the UK. Eventually I tracked down 2374 from an eBay sale seller in the US that seemed to focus on estate sales. He's also asking for stupid money, but while the photos are terrible, I can see this watch being my absolute favorite dial from this period. So I cheekily offered more than he asked for, and just to surprise him, he happened to offer a little more preparation and the deal was done. Of course I still had to pay 20% UK VAT here, which always hurts, but nonetheless, when it arrived on a Wednesday, happily packed and ticked, the cost was quickly forgotten.
Since it arrived I of course gave the old girl a once over and cleaned it up, but it already has new crystal so very little work has been done. As you can see, this version of the 2374 has leaf hands (not the staggered ones) which I've always liked, and they contrast well with the rest of my Dauphine hands. But the real attraction for me is the dial and its mirrored numerals, with a very unique character design, especially the "2". I've been looking for a good example of these figures. The configuration is a 12-2-4-6-8-10 layout, which also appealed to me. Does anyone know if this number style has a name?
The small dial on the second hand has a slightly twisted pattern and is applied with silver-tone bronze. I'm not sure how the dial and hands are finished as there is no tarnish anywhere as you can see they are in remarkable condition. Rhodium plating, maybe? The crown is plain without the omega symbol, so I'm assuming it's a later replacement of that moment - however, I've seen Mike's example look very similar, so that might be correct at this date (1946)? Implications regarding this would be welcome.
On this, the other side of the crown, you can see we have some pretty nice, omitted, harsh lugs. You'll also notice that, despite some respectable dings and scars, the case is very sharp and shows no signs of ever being polished. The main point of interest, however, is that there is no surrounding bezel and the dial face of the case is solid. At the back, just to be really different, there's actually a bezel that's task is to re-hold the case.
You can see the tailgate here. The return case is a push on the case, but not very tight, and then the bezel is held firmly in place. Why all this complexity is considered necessary (or desirable) I'm not sure. The brushed finish on the back is probably original (my 2445 period has the same age) and is marred by just one scratch. Damn it.
Below is the return taken out of the case and in its two parts. The bezel is very thin and bright and requires careful handling. Getting it apart isn't too hard, but to reassemble the back you really need a case. I find that my press works great with the 36mm die - remember to pull the crown out to the set position as you do this!
The interior of the case has some pretty nice perlage and reference 2374/5, but no case maker's markings. "Patented+" probably refers to the tailgate fastening system. . .
Movement like this, caliber 30.10 RA PC AM 17P (330), serial number 10963829, it dates from 1946. To my surprise and relief, this is in lovely cosmetic condition, not as good as my Centenary's, but off. The copper plating is perfect, nothing is missing or discolored, which is especially important on the rotor, especially since it's the "look" that's so important. All we can criticize, really, is that this is a bank stop spring that is wrong (too big). This is no problem as I have the correct spare parts in stock. The odd spring clip between the rest springs was only found on the first iteration 30. 10 and 28. 10 movements whose function is to push back against the case and hold the movement in place. There are no regular case clamping screws like the later versions. So once you have the return, all you have to do is remove the crown and stem and the movement and dial will pop out. On my example, you'll notice "Fabriqué Ensuisse" engraved on the rotor bridge, something I haven't come across before. It makes me wonder if this watch was originally sent to France or Belgium. Archival extracts from Omega may solve the puzzle, maybe.
Finally, here they are side by side - 2374 and my century. They are probably pretty much there as I have the centenary extract and it is dated December 1947. You can clearly see that the Omega design team was working on a very unique house style at the time, and the two dials have a lot in common. I reckon 2374 made a good steel mate for the Quan Jubilee special, what do you think?

On the back, the center links are bent down. I see this on another bracelet, but only on the links near the clasp. Is this a forged mark or is someone just the bracelet?
