Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier Introduces Upgraded VMF 5500 Micro-Rotor Movement

At the upcoming EPHJ trade fair in Geneva (June 16–19), a key event for precision industries including watchmaking, Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier has announced a significant update to its movement lineup. The Swiss movement specialist, known for supplying high-end calibres to prestigious brands, has unveiled the VMF 5500, a new ultra-thin micro-rotor movement designed to replace its long-serving VMF 5400.

A Unique Position in Swiss Watchmaking

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier operates within the watchmaking division of the Sandoz Family Foundation, with luxury house Hermès holding a 25% stake. This structure gives the manufacture a distinctive standing among Swiss suppliers. It is renowned for producing mechanical movements that combine exceptional quality, reliability, and industrial consistency. While its production volumes are modest compared to the broader industry, Vaucher's credibility among collectors and brands is substantial.

Since 2020, Vaucher has intensified its focus on long-term durability and serviceability. All newly developed calibres are engineered and homologated to meet a 10-year durability target, and clients receive an 8-year service guarantee for movements developed after that date. This commitment to longevity has become a defining characteristic of Vaucher's industrial philosophy.

The manufacture also benefits from the expertise of its sister company, Atokalpa, also part of the Sandoz Family Foundation's watchmaking division, which specializes in regulating organs and precision turning. This synergy enhances Vaucher's ability to produce highly precise components.

Vaucher's movement portfolio is deliberately compact, focusing on segments where the manufacture can offer genuine expertise. It includes classic automatic calibres, micro-rotor movements, tourbillons, and chronographs. Among its most complex offerings are split-seconds chronograph movements supplied to brands like TAG Heuer, Richard Mille, and Parmigiani Fleurier. A recent highlight was the TH20-08 Evergraph chronograph, developed in collaboration with TAG Heuer.

The VMF 5500: A Complete Redesign

The new VMF 5500 succeeds the VMF 5400, which has been a cornerstone of Vaucher's range for over a decade, powering many Parmigiani watches, including the Tonda PF micro-rotor. With the VMF 5500, Vaucher has undertaken a thorough redesign, optimizing virtually every aspect of the movement to align with its durability and quality objectives—namely, the 10-year homologation target and the 8-year service guarantee.

Importantly, Vaucher retained identical dimensions, fixing points, and stem height to ensure full interchangeability with the VMF 5400. The new calibre maintains a 30mm diameter and an ultra-thin height of just 2.6mm in its no-date configuration. This allows existing clients using the VMF 5400 to integrate the VMF 5500 without any modifications to their watch cases or construction.

Enhanced Performance and Reliability

Beyond the unchanged dimensions, the movement itself has evolved significantly. The entire kinetic chain has been reworked, starting with the barrel. Both the barrel architecture and the mainspring have been extensively optimized, resulting in a substantial increase in power reserve from 45 hours to 65 hours. The gear train and tooth profiles have also been completely redesigned, leading to a full reconsideration of energy management.

Considerable work has been done on the materials used for each component, including the elimination of lead from the manufacturing process. Lubrication and epilame treatments have been comprehensively revised to improve long-term reliability and stability. The 3Hz regulating organ, made by Atokalpa, remains based on the same variable-inertia architecture found in the VMF 5400, featuring a metallic hairspring and a balance wheel regulated through gold inertia blocks.

Customization and Technical Specifications

An important aspect of the VMF 5500 is its extensive customization capabilities. Thanks to Vaucher's modern machine park and the elimination of stamped components previously used on a few parts of the VMF 5400, the manufacture can now offer a significantly higher degree of aesthetic and technical customization to interested brands.
