Inspiration and Concept

The inspiration for the Seven Spheres comes from two distinct sources: astronomy and cinema. Marco Lang cites Carl Sagan's novel Contact and its 1997 film adaptation, which features a rotating machine, as a visual trigger. The name itself references the seven celestial spheres of Ptolemaic and Copernican cosmology, where planets moved in concentric orbits. This astronomical theme is brought to life in the regulator's design, with nested rings rotating in a hypnotic rhythm.

Unlike many contemporary multi-axis tourbillons that prioritize speed and spectacle, the Seven Spheres moves deliberately slowly. The outermost ring completes a rotation in one hour, while inner structures rotate more rapidly toward the escapement. This measured choreography is calming and beautiful, building tension through gradual motion without visual aggression. It does not stare at the wearer; it gently draws them in.

Engineering and Construction

The slow movement is a technical necessity. Energy passes through seven levels of gearing before reaching the escapement, and each additional axis introduces friction and inertia. Rather than using lightweight composites or ultra-high-speed cages, Lang remained faithful to traditional materials and hand-crafted construction. The seven nested rings are made of titanium, but titanium alone was too lightweight for perfect rotational balance. Tiny platinum inserts were integrated into the structures to stabilize motion. The wheels and pinions required special geometries due to extremely tight spacing, and the watch demanded years of experimentation and the construction of entirely new tools for assembly.

Case and Display

The 42mm case is relatively restrained, echoing the Zweigesicht-1 design but without modular lugs. Crafted in platinum, it features a classic Saxon profile with sloping lugs, polished contours, and discreet crown guards. The massive top sapphire crystal reveals the mechanical universe inside. Total thickness reaches 18mm, largely due to the height of the central regulator, but the strongly domed crystal softens the proportions. The lugs curve sharply downward, ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist.

The hour and minute display is one of the most fascinating elements. Conventional hands would not work with such a large central structure, so Lang uses floating arrow-shaped hands mounted on peripheral rotating rings. These blued steel hands appear suspended above the movement, orbiting the tourbillon while indicating time on an engine-turned chapter ring at the dial's edge. The effect is spectacular, making the watch seem to have no fixed architecture at all. The chapter ring features red minute markers at five-minute intervals, with a signature at the top and 'Made in Saxony' at the bottom.

The Movement and Finishing

Turning the watch over reveals another intriguing view. The movement is organized around the oversized regulator, with components pushed toward the periphery. Four mainspring barrels provide energy, and an elaborate winding train connects everything through exposed gears. The finishing is unmistakably Saxon in spirit, with frosted and gilded plates, brushed-steel bridges, black-polished elements, engravings, and carefully bevelled edges. Two swan-neck click springs, each circumventing a diamond, recall certain historical Lang & Heyne movements.

Marco Lang admits the project was driven more by idealism than by gains in precision. This honesty provides the watch much of its appeal; it feels deeply personal and emotional.
